Moody Ruth swings to chess

K Srinivasa Raghavan
Kozhikode, April 18: She went to Castellon (Spain) for the World Youth (under-18) chess championship to get a feel of a major event and gain some experience. But insouciant Ruth Sheldon walked away with the title, with a score of nine out of 11.

The English girl, who is here for the World Junior Championship, said in a tete-a-tete

: ``It was a pleasant surprise winning the world under-18 championship.''

Though many make a career out of chess, Ruth is different. She simply loves to play and her competitive spirit keeps her going. ``I don't want to make a career out of chess. I am indolent, I don't work very hard,'' was her candid admission.

She does not have a regular coach, but plans to work with countryman and International Master Angus Dunnington, who went as coach for England team in the World Youth championship. ``Dunnington played a vital role in my victory at Castellon,'' said Ruth.

Her style of play depends on her mood. ``I love strategic type of games where I have clear plans, butsometimes, I can be very aggressive,'' she said.

Ruth, who lives in Manchester and has been at chess from the age of eight, will be joining the University next year, where she plans to take up philosophy or political science.

Ruth's interest does not stop with chess. Watching drama and globe-trotting are her other interests.

Manchester United, one of the premier football clubs in Europe does not attract her, but she admires former Manchester United's mercurial star Eric Cantona.

Reverting to the ongoing tournament here, she said: ``Monika Bobrowska of Poland is quite a strong player. It will be a tough tournament. However, I would like to match wits with them,'' said Ruth, when asked about her chances in the World Junior.
