Congress to protest State Govt's `failure'

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, NOV 18: The Congress will launch a statewide agitation against the ruling Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party government's failure ``in all sectors of governance.'' However, the party leadership has not drawn up a concrete plan of the agitation yet.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Prataprao Bhosale announced the decision at the weekly press conference held at the party office opposite Mantralaya this afternoon.

``The alliance government has failed to fulfill any of its assurances in the poll manifesto. The citizens of Maharashtra are facing serious problems in all walks of life and the government is hardly doing anything to find a way out. Hence, we have decided to launch an agitation against the government. Directives to this effect will be communicated to all district and taluka committees of the party in the next two days. A detailed plan of the agitation is yet to be worked out, but it will comprise morchas, demonstrations, gheraos and dharnas,''Bhosale said.

Bhosalecould not say who would participate in the protests, how and where. ``Everything will be decided in due course. The problems faced by citizens are different in different districts and hence, need different kinds of agitations. We have only decided to launch an agitation, which will be intensified in the next few months,'' added Bhosale.

MPCC spokesmen Vasant Chavan and Dr V R Sherekar chose not to intervene, and let the MPCC president do the talking.

Bhosale added that MPCC members had also decided to communicate the ideas that emerged during the brainstorming session of the party's recent Panchmarhi convention. ``Camps will be held at the taluka and state levels, where Congress leaders will address party workers,'' the MPCC president said.

Bhosale condemned the State Government for increasing sales tax on petrol and diesel. ``This government is only keen on increasing inflation. Instead of solving problems, the government is merely adding to existing ones,'' he said.
