MUMBAI, November 18: Mumbai clocked its 21st encounter and the police their 26th victim this year, with the gunning down of a Chhota Rajan gangster at Jogeshwari this morning. Two bystanders were injured in the exchange of fire between the police and Baptist Salvadore D'Souza. One of them is critical.The police were tipped off that D'Souza was to visit a contact at Ramesh Nagar. A team comprising senior police inspector of Oshiwara station P Mule and sub inspector Daya Nayak laid a trap. At around 11.30 am, D'Souza drove up in a white Maruti 800, and alighting, walked towards Ramesh Nagar.
D'Souza allegedly sensed danger and turned towards the police, who asked him to surrender. He allegedly fired five rounds at the police, injuring two bystanders who happened to be playing cricket in the vicinity. Asit Dalvi (19), was hit in the leg, while Manish Thakkar (33) got a bullet near the spinal cord.
Police then fired 12 rounds at D'Souza. He, along with Dalvi and Thakkar, were rushed to Cooper Hospital.While D'Souza was declared dead on admission, Thakkar had to be shifted to Nanavati Hospital, where he is in a critical state. Dalvi has been discharged.
D'Souza figures among the main accused in over 13 cases, including three murders. He was involved in the killings of builder Azmat Patel at Kashimira last year, and exporter Shabbir Shaikh and builder Sohail Rizvi this year.
