Puri helps Cardinal Gracias to victory

MUMAbI, November 18: Ashish Puri's splendid all round performance helped Cardinal Gracias to score a nine-wicket win over St Xavier's, Andheri in the first round of the MSSA-Colgate Giles Shield Inter-School Cricket Tournament at the Azad Maidan.

Dr Antonio D'Silva's Shrijeet Gupta captured three wickets for 12 runs and scored 40 runs in their school eight win over Shailendra Education.

St Joseph's Vikhroli 122 (Ashish Alva 30, Juned Kazi 30 n.o., Hemant Kamble 3-29) bt Dr Babasaheb Ambedekar 93 (Rakesh Rao 5-29, Ashish Alva 4-32). St Xavier's Parle 226-8 (Madan Ferhan 86, Natraj 35, Rahul Naik 31) bt Yashodhan, Goregaon 45 (Sheryas Deraj 3-10). Don Bosco, Borivli 139 (Nikhil Salvi 36, Tanmay Joshi 3-48) lost to Vidya Mandir, Dahisar 140-7 (Rakesh Khadye 56, Wilson 3-35, Animish 3-23).

Shailendra Education 86 (Shrijeet Gupta 3-12, Amulya Kamerkar 3-13) lost to Dr Antonio D'Silva 87-2(Babaji Satam 30, Shreejit Gupta 46 n.o.); Children Welfare 69 (B Karan 5-17) lost to Bombay Scottish 71-2. Esplanade 44 (Niraj Shah 4-8, Sumit Padia 4-7) lost to St Francis, Bhayander 45-6 (Akshay Patel 3-5). St Xavier's, Andheri 88 (Ashish Puri 4-22) lost to Cardinal Gracias, Bandra 90-1 (Ashish Puri 47 n.o.).

Ruparel champs

Ruparel College won the Multigames Inter-College under-19 Cricket Tournament for CK Nayudu trophy defeating Kirti College by seven wickets at the Oval Grounds.

Put in to bat, Kirti scored 126 for five in 25 overs. Pranil Pawar scored 52 with seven hits to boundary while Atish Badade 30 with five boundaries. In reply to Kirti's small total, Ruparel surpassed their total in 22.3 overs at the loss of three wickets. Rohan Bane scored a half century with six hits to the fence while Abhijit Shettye (26) and Swapnil Khadye (24) contributed to the team's total.

St Mary's in final

St Mary's Dahisar defeated Jamnabai Narsee in three sets 15-12, 10-15, 15-8 to enter thefinal of the girls under-16 MSSA-Colgate throwball Inter-School tournamnent at the Azad Maidan. The Dahisar school will take on Villa Theresa who got past St Anne's Fort A in straight sets 15-9, 16-14.In the girls under-14 final's Utpal Sanghavi will meet Villa Theresa.

Sanghavi defeated St Theresa 15-11, 15-5 while Villa Theresa had to play three sets 15-12, 10-15, 15-12 before booking a berth in the final.In the under-12 final, Utpal Sanghavi, Parle will take on Villa Theresa A. Sanghavi surpassed Bombay Scottish 15-7, 15-6 while Theresa A entered the final by beating St Mary's Dahisar.

Ordnance win

Ordnance Factory, Ambernath scored a fine 4-2 win over Independent SC in a Punjab National Bank-sponsored Bombay Hockey League played at the Khalsa College ground today.

In the second minute of the match, Ordnance Factory took lead through Sadam Kahan's goal. TJ Mathai added the second goal to the tally in the 26th minute. They were leading 2-0 at half-time. After the breather, Independent gotone back in the 31st minute through Chirag Raut. Thereafter, Sadanand Kahar scored a brace (36th and 50th) for Ordnance and sealed the victory. In the dying minutes, Benedict D'Souza reduced the margin for Independent.

Good day for Pendharkar

Pendharkar College defeated BPCA 10-2 a women's pre-quarter-final match of the Inter-Collegiate handball tournament played at the KJ Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce today.

For Pedharkar, Shilpa Shetty scored four goals while Shradha Joshi had three against her name. Meenal Langye had brace and Leena Wadekar completed the tally. For the losers, Smita Dhende and Medha Sawant scored a goal each.
