Seeds of peace
The Lions Club of Poona Erandawana organised International Peace Poster Contest at Dr Kalmadi Shamarao High School recently. The theme put forth for the kids was `Planting the seeds of peace,' as 110 kids took part in the 11-13 age group. Ten posters have been selected and sent to the panel of judges for further selection where other district Lions clubs will be sending in their entries. The Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the contest to emphasise the importance of world peace to the young and provide the kids an opportunity to share their vision. The 160th birth anniversary of the founder of the Brahmo Samaj, Keshab Chandra Sen, was observed at the St Mira's School on November 19. Speaking on the occasion, Dada J P Vaswani hailed Keshab Chandra Sen as a man of penetrating vision and imbibed with spiritual magnetism. The Brahmo Samaj founded by Sen was open to all communities and races, a kind of a universal church for all mankind. Selections from various scriptures were compiled for lessons and discussions that were a part and parcel of the Brahmo Samaj's intellectual movement.
Food for celebration
The Telugu population of Pune celebrate the Vanabhojana under the shadow of an Amla tree during the month of Kartik. Keeping with the tradition a large number of Telugu families got together on November 17 to celebrate Vanabhojan on the lawns of the University of Pune. With everybody getting food stuff the affair turned out to be a sumptuous buffet which was relished by all. Everybody participated enthusiastically in the games and sports that were held at the venue.
Bewitch the customer
The Allana Institute of Management conducted a seminar on `21st century Manager - How to Prepare for the Change' on November 17. Mukund Ranade, managing director of Archer Management Services, was the main speaker at the seminar. According to him, technology was advancing at a phenomenal speed and therefore the students had to keep abreast of the latest developments. According to him the 21st century manager could only succeed by ``fascinating, bewitching and delighting the customer''.
Pensioners meet
The half-yearly get-together of the Defence Pensioners Association will be held at Udyan Prasad Karayalay near Bhikardas Maruti Mandir in Sadashiv Peth from 10.00 am onwards on November 27. The meeting will cover matters and other problems of pensioners in the light of recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission report. G K Abhyankar and Bhagwan G Joshi, retired financial advisors will be the chief guests at the meeting.
Visit to warship
The Rotary Club of Poona Riverside organised a study tour to a warship in Mumbai recently. The tour was organised with the Indian Maritime Foundation and the Indian Navy. The group, consisting of 35 children and 20 adults, visited INS Shakti which is a fuelship. The group had the privilege of having lunch hosted by the crew of the ship. Due to the tremendous response received the Rotary Club of Pune Riverside will organise one more trip to the warship in December. Talents galore
The Innerwheel Club of Pune Riverside organised a free hand surgery consultation camp with Dr Pankaj Jindal on November 8. Dr Jayshree Firodia, paediatrician, was the chief guest. Another similar camp for spastic children was held on November 14 wherein Mohini Rathi, Innerwheel district chairman, was the chief guest. The venue for both the camps - Naik Hospital - was sponsored by Dr Satyasheel Naik. In all, 200 patients attended the two camps.
The club also organised a `Talent Show' on the eve of Children's Day at Nehru Memorial Hall, where seven Innerwheel clubs from Pune took part. The programme, which included fashion shows, dances, fancy dress, singing and instrument playing, was presented by the children of the club members for the children of Seletian Sisters Home of orphans, Inlaks and Budhrani Cancer Paediatric ward and Mayavi Balwadi. Sweets were distributed to all the children present in the hall. This programme provided a creative platform to the participants, at the same time giving the underprivileged children an opportunity for entertainment.
