Butcher, Thorpe show flashes of brilliance
While England have shown at the Gabba they are still prone to making mental errors, they have also established that Australia will find them harder to beat than at any time during the last decade. In particular the two left-handers Mark Butcher and Graham Thorpe showed flashes of brilliance tinged with great determination as they repelled the Australian attack to end the day at 299 for four.

Eyes on Bishop
All eyes were on Ian Bishop who is yet to make his presence felt on Indian soil on this tour. He bowled and gave his boys some fielding practise. And finally, when the team manager Joel Garner came to brief the press about tomorrow's game, the question of whether Ian Bishop would take the field, prior to the `Test' match in Bangalore, still lingered.

Zimbabwe win
Neil Johnson hit a fine maiden century today to guide Zimbabwe to their first one-day win on Pakistani soil with a six-wicket triumph that tied the series 1-1 with the decider in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. Set an easy rate of 4.24 runs per over after dismissing Pakistan for a modest 211 on the last ball of the 50th over, the visitors scored 212 for 4 in 40.4 overs.

Kaypee's ton
Where youngsters failed, the old-warhorse Amarjeet Kaypee once again confirmed the adage of `Old is Gold'. Playing in his 99th Ranji Trophy match, the Haryana veteran found the setting right to slam his 25th ton and pull his team out of dire straits.
