SURAT, Nov 23: The police probe into the alleged desecration of a statue in the Udhna area of the city on Sunday has revealed that the damage was accidental and ruled out the involvement of any group in the incident. On Sunday, Udhna residents had raised an alarm, claiming that an idol of Parvati in the Hareshwar Mahadev temple had been damaged by unidentified people in the night.Udhna PI B V Rabari, ACP H R Malek and others visited the site, but investigations revealed that the damage was accidental. Rabari told Express Newsline that the pujari admitted to having damaged the idol while cleaning it. No official complaint had been registered because nothing major had happened, he said, adding that the pujari admitted to locking the temple at night and unlocking it in the morning.
Police officials, too, had been apprehensive that with the Bharuch by-polls just hours away, certain quarters were trying to foment trouble by desecrating the statue.
