SURAT, Nov 23: The Kamrej police of the district on Monday arrested 10 people allegedly involved in rioting and violence in Nani Pardi village of the taluka, where two groups of different communities had resorted to violence over a minor scuffle on Sunday.According to information, eight of those arrested are Hindus, while two are Muslims. Trouble began in the area on Sunday evening, after Hindus reportedly burnt down seven shops owned by members of the other community. The rampage was in retaliation against the beating up of a Hindu youth by a group a couple of days earlier.
One Suresh Vasava, in a complaint with the police, alleged that he was taking one Manhar, who met with an accident, to a hospital, when a group of Muslims obstructed their way. When asked to move, 10 youths, lead by one Gulam Patel, beat up one person.
However, Sadique Patel, in a cross-complaint, claimed that eight people, whom he identified, stormed into the market and burnt down cabins owned by Muslims. The district police rushed to the spot late in the night and brought the situation under control.
The police stated that one company of SRP had been posted at the village even as officials were busy with the bandobast for the Bharuch by-poll on Wednesday. While eight of those arrested are Hindus, another two are Muslims, the police said. No untoward incident was reported in the village which witnessed violent clashed on Sunday evening.
Both sides registered cross complaints in the police station.
