CHANDIGARH, Nov 23: To help give a facelift to the City sub-centre in Sector 34, the Chandigarh Administration has entrusted the job of developing it to the Chandigarh Housing Board.According to sources, the Administration has already asked the CHB to go ahead with the development work in the under-developed commercial area of Sector 34, work on which would be started in December by the CHB after inviting tenders. This is for the first time that the CHB has been entrusted with the job of developing a sector as this used to be done earlier by the Administration.
Though the CHB would bear the expenses of about Rs 1.3 crore for developing the commercial area in the Sector, the Administration would compensate it by providing some commercial sites in the area to the CHB. Among the development works required to be undertaken by the CHB are repairs and maintenance of existing roads, road berms and parking areas in the commercial part of the area which also has some open spaces, besides constructing new roads and parking zones.
Sources say the development plan also includes improvement of street-lighting and tree plantation, apart from making space available for pedestrians. Provision of sanitation facilities like toilets for the public, also forms part of the plan.
The development plan came up after senior functionaries of the Administration visited the area sometime ago and it was felt that since the area was prestigious, it should be developed. ``The vast open spaces with tall grass were eye-sores in the area and required immediate attention,'' an official said.
Meanwhile, the development of the area would take place despite non-availability of detailed architectural plans of the Sector to the CHB, as they had yet to be formulated. The plans of the City sub-centre include certain pretigious sites, including a five-star hotel and a centre for performing arts.
