NEW DELHI, November 23: Gujarat and Punjab lifted the handball titles for boys and girls under-17, cutting short the ambitions of hosts Chandigarh to extend their dominance beyond the hockey grounds, at the 44th National School Games in Chandigarh, according to reports reaching here.In the summit clash, last year's runners-up Gujarat trounced Chandigarh 21-13 in the boys section, while in the girls category, it was the turn of last year's runners-up Punjab to turn the heat on the hosts. The Punjab girls beat Chandigarh 17-4.
However, defending champions Chandigarh made no mistake on their way to set up the title clash with Madhya Pradesh, who had to be satisfied with third place last year. Continuing their supermacy on the hockey grounds, the hosts thrashed Punjab 6-1 in a one-sided affair. The hosts hardly had to sweat it out against an opponent who showed little resistance. Even their defence put up a pathetic show as it reeled under a heavy onslaught.
Their counterparts in the girls section also moved to the final defeating Himachal Pradesh 3-1 in another semifinal.
In the second semifinal of the boys section, Uttar Pradesh smoothly sailed to the final outclassing Madhya Pradesh 2-0.
