DAV College emerge victorious

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Nov 27: The local S D College's credible win over last year's runners-up Punjab University Campus in the semifinal yesterday promised much but their performance -- or the lack of it -- in the Punjab University Inter-College final today against the mighty DAV College left much to be desired.

In one of the most-lop-sided final of the recent times, the defending champions could choose to be arrogant, yet walk away with the crown, winning the game at the Punjab Engineering College ground by eight wickets.

In the third-place match at the DAV College ground, Punjab University Campus beat Government College, Ludhiana by 130 runs.

Admittedly, SD College started the game as underdogs. Their batsmen, especially the lower-order had rallied splendidly in yesterday's game, but today was a different ball-game altogether. After their top-order failed yet again, falling to the DAV seamer Vinod Thakur, the later-order too folded up within minutes. A total of 114 meant a mis-match and if the SD College bowlers took the game beyond 25 overs, it had much to thank the DAV batsmen -- Vikram Minhas, Yuvraj Singh and skipper Dinesh Mongia -- who chose to gain some batting practice after an early-blitzkrieg by the southpaw Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj hit four fours and one six in his knock (35) before pulling a Sandeep Arora long-hop straight down the mid-wicket fielder Anurag Sharma's throat. Vikram, on then other hand reached a well-deserved half-century (50 n.o.) and together with Dinesh (12 n.o.), saw to it that his team won by a handsome margin.

In the morning, Prabhjot's 30 was the only saving grace in a reckless SD College batting. Vinod Thakur seized the opportunity to cash in on the frivolous SD College approach and took four wickets.

PUC owed their win to a masterly century by Balraj (108) and left-arm spinner Amit Dehra's four-wicket haul. Balraj made up for his yesterday's failure and hit 12 fours in his responsible knock and with support from Manoj Rajan (35), PUC piled up an imposing 260 for 8 in 50 overs. In reply, the Ludhiana college were bowled out for a paltry 130. Amit Dehra and Nitin Gupta (2-20) bowled well to reap the rewards.

Meanwhile, the Panjab University team will be selected tomorrow after trials at the PUC ground at 9 a.m.

Scores
PUC: 260 for 8 (Balraj 108, Manoj Rajan 35, Parvesh Monty) beat GC, Ludhiana: 130 allout (Amit Dehra 4-27, Nitin Gupta 2-20).

SD College: 114 allout (Prabhjot 30; Vinod Thakur 4-30) lost to DAV: 116 for 2 in 25 overs (Vikram Minhas 50 n.o., Yuvraj Singh 35, Dinesh Mongia 12 n.o).
