SURAT, Dec 1: The police detained a number of Congress activists, including city leaders, on Tuesday after they staged a `chakka jam' to protest against the demolition of the Sanjaynagar slum at Udhna, which they alleged was being done to serve the interests of a builder-corporator of the ruling BJP in the SMC. They were released later. The chakka jam programme, though by and large peaceful, put traffic at the Udhana cross roads out of gear with workers squatting on the road. The workers also met SMC commissioner and expressed their displeasure at the demolition, which they said was being done under the pretext of road widening to serve the personal interests of a builder from the area. They later submitted a memorandum to the police commissioner, highlighting the rise in the crime graph. They have also threatened to resort to violent means of agitation if the authorities failed to check the rise in crime. Pointing out the recent murder of two school girls in the city, they said the overall situation in the state had deteriorated after the Bharatiya Janata Party government assumed power. They have also highlighted a number of daylight robberies, cases of abductions in the past fortnight, alleging the police's inability to tackle the same. Criticising the alleged attempts of certain builders to usurp land of slum-dwellers, they have allegedthat some builders were hand in glove with the Mumbai underworld.
Among others, city Congress president Thakore Naik, GPCC vice-president Kadir Peerzada, B C Sonawane, Zameer Azmi, Babu Raika and other leaders besides a number of party workers, took part in the agitation.
They have also threatened to stage another chakka jam on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the commissioner, while claiming that most cases had been solved by the police, assured that he would look into the complaints put forward by the delegation.
