MUMBAI, December 2: Students from over 50 schools in the city exhibited their talents in various frontiers of science during the three-day-long Science Exhibition that began here on Tuesday at St Joseph High School in Colaba.The exhibits ranged from an automatic postbox alarm to novel ways of generating electric power from non-conventional sources. One of them included a unique method of drawing electricity from lemons. Using metallic wires, the students showed how a series of lemons could be converted into an electrical circuit and provide energy like an electrolytic cell.
Inaugurating the science fete, former director of Nehru Planetarium, Dr V S Venkatavardan, said such events would go a long way in stimulating scientific temper among young students.
Speaking at the function, M P Sharma, principal of G D Somani School, said inculcating values along with science awareness is the core of present day education. He suggested that science exhibitions could be used as a platform to create an awarenessabout various aspects of science and its role in society.
Apart from various electronic and mechanical gadgets designed by the kids, there were a host of science-related programmes to educate visitors on the ill effects of using plastic bags to health and environment and the damage posed by nuclear reactors and carbon emissions.
The star shows of the exhibition were a solar city model designed by students of the host school and a puppet show by the Diamond Jubilee School, which wittilt explained the hazards posed by plastic bags to health and environment.
