Self Immolation

AYODHYA: Police today arrested a Shiv Sena activist who threatened self-immolation on December 6 to press his demand for the construction of a temple at the disputed site in ayodhya.

Senior superintendent of police, Anil Agarwal, said that the person, Chandrakant Pathak, was picked up from his residence and jailed.

Security beefed

NEW DELHI: Several State governments have stepped up security to prevent possible trouble on December 6 when some political parties and organisations have called for observance of protest against demolition of Babri Masjid on this day six years ago.

A thick security cover had been thrown around Ayodhya, Faizabad, Mathura and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, and sensitive areas in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.

Law enforcement authorities had also taken into consideration the VHP's proposed programme to gather in strength at Goverdhan town, some 24-km from Mathura, to observe samkalp divas and take a vow to liberate SriKrishna Janmasthan, police said.

Women naxal killed

HYDERABAD: A woman naxalite of the outlawed Peoples' War Group was killed in an encounter with police at Sirunapally forest area in the naxal-infested Nizambad district of Andhra Pradesh today.

A huge cache of arms and ammunition was also recovered from the encounter site under Dichipally police station limits, police said. An unspecified number of ultras belonging to four guerilla squads including Banswada, Kamareddy, Sirunapalli and Yella Reddy were camping at the encounter site in connection with three-day training camp held by PWG leadership when the fierce exchange of fire occurred, police said.
