Rajya Sabha approves DDA disciplinary Bill

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, December 3: The Rajya Sabha today approved by voice vote the Delhi Development Authority (validation of disciplinary powers) Bill 1997 seeking to vest the DDA vice-chairman with authority to dismiss and take other disciplinary action against erring officers.

Piloting the Bill, Urban Affairs Minister Ram Jethmalani said there were many defects in the existing Act, which were brought to the notice of the government by the High Court. The DDA employees were currently subjected to penalties by the Central government alone, he added.

John F. Fernandes of the Congress said action should be taken against those officers, who have not pointed out the flaws to the government: ``Ignorance of the law is no justification''.

O.P. Kohli (BJP) also criticised the functioning of the DDA. He said the DDA authorities had totally violated the master plan.
