Transport planner joins World Bank

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, DEC 4: Arun Mokashi, head of the transport planning and management group of Tata Consultancy, has been appointed as a Transport Specialist at the World Bank's New Delhi office from December. He will assist in the multi-disciplinary approach of the Bank in their various transport projects.

A civil engineer from India and a post graduate in highway transportation from the UK, Mokashi has over 30 years of experience in the transport sector. He founded and led the transport group in the TCS in 1980. Mokashi has also one of the architects of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP II), from its earlier avatar of Bombay Urban Transport Project (BUTP I).

A believer in the need for an integrated traffic system in the city where the railways, Mumbai's lifeline, are strengthened alongwith bus services, he has emphasised the need for public participation in traffic projects. In 1992, he had put across the need for the construction of a metro for Mumbai.

``It is only the people of Mumbai who will be ableto force the authorities to work for their projects,'' said Mokashi in a talk at the Indian Merchants Chamber on Tuesday.

In his role as an active citizen, Mokashi was also convenor of the transport group of Bombay First, a citizens' initiative for a better city.

Mokashi takes with him years of experience in handling a wide range of traffic projects at the central, state and local governments in India.
