Trivedi props Gujarat after Indulkar century gives Mumbai advantage

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Mumbai, Dec 4: Deep Trivedi stood like a rock as Mumbai, propped by Vinit Indulkar's century, pressed for victory against Gujarat in the under-16 Merchant Trophy West Zone league cricket match today.

Set to score 305 for an outright victory in 70 overs, Gujarat struggled to stay alive against some determined off-spin bowling from Mumbai skipper Omkar Khanvilkar, before eking a draw on the final day of the three-day encounter. Trivedi remained unbeaten on 42 after batting for 276 minutes, facing 232 deliveries, as the rest of the Gujarat top-order was packed off by Khanvilkar (4-35) at the Elf Vengsarkar Cricket Academy, Oval Maidan here.

The tourists found scoring runs so difficult that out of the 80 overs bowled by Mumbai today, 39 were maiden overs.

Mumbai took five points on the basis of a first innings lead while Gujarat claimed three, to add to the five points they had earned against Maharashtra earlier. Mumbai play Saurashtra next while Gujarat take on Baroda.

Indulkar, unbeaten on 73 overnight, notched up his maiden career century, staying unconquered on 114 (325m, 242b, 11x4) when Mumbai decided to declare at 264-6. The ninth standard student from IES English School, Dadar, later said he had been determined to get to the mark as he went in to bat this morning.

``My coach told me to get to the three-figure mark first and then go for the bowling,'' said Indulkar, explaining Mumbai's quest for quick runs before declaration.

He admittedly batted with complete concentration, always keeping at the back of his mind the fact that quick runs were needed. But the little No 3 batsman, playing his first match for the Mumbai under-16 team, was disappointed they could not win.

Indulkar, who idolises Australian Mark Waugh, said he wants to take things one step at a time, when queried on his plans for the future. ``I want to get into the West Zone (under-16) team first and then into the Rest of India squad,'' said the level-headed young sportsman on his immediate ambitions.
