Boricha holds Thipsay in 3rd round

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, DEC 4: Twenty-year-old Ketan Boricha of Lala Lajpatrai School probably played the best game of his career when he held second seed Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay (International rating 2450) of Union Bank to a draw in the third round of the Independence Cup Chess Tournament at Andheri Sports Complex today.

Another top-ranked player, fifth-seed V Saravanan (2390) of BPCL, was held to the second consecutive draw by Girish Chandnani. In fact, Chandnani had win in two moves but he overlooked it to gift away half-a-point. Boricha (2225) played the Alapin variation to Thipsay's Sicilian defence. Both the players had the equal position after the opening but, Boricha's 15th move 15...Ne5 gave him slight edge as Thipsay's pieces were cramped for space. But Thipsay wriggled out of the position as Boricha found the advantage too little and offered a draw which his opponent accepted.

Chandnani played the Sicilian defence. Saravanan replied with the Dragon Variation. On the 22nd move, Saravana blundered with his h5move. It gave the advantage to Chandnani. The latter, then had a check in two moves, but overlooked to settle for a draw. Another upset saw eighth seed IM NK Mishra (2350) lose to young Saptarshi Roy Choudhary of West Bengal. Seventh seed Dinesh Kumar Sharma (2375) was held to a surprise draw by Dilip Pagay (2230) in a Sicilian-Alapin game. On the top board, Dibyendu Barua (2540) of Tata Steel struggled to defeat K Vishweshwaran (2240) of Tamil Nadu in a Sicilian Narjdorf variation game. He joins Ponnuswamy Konguvel (2410), Sudhakar Babu (2335) of Indian Bank, Sriram Jha (2330) of LIC, Avinash Awate (Tata Consultancy), Choudhary and SJ Kamath.
