NEW DELHI, December 4: Twenty Two parents hoping to get their children admitted to Ryan International School in Rohini have written to the principal saying that the ``fixed amount of donation of Rs 30,000 is not justified''. The letter was sent on November 27, two days before the High Court ordered that the Duggal committee would be formed to examine the fee structure in 900 private schools in Delhi. Though Ryan International has subsequently put the matter on hold, the parents allege that donations and exorbitant fees are still being collected by most of the private schools.``The High Court order is not being implemented,'' says Vijender Kumar, president of the Delhi Abhibhavak Mahasangh (DAM). ``The order clearly states that the government should check the commercialisation of schools. But there is no sign of the Duggal committee, despite the fact that the court had set a 10-day deadline for forming it.'' In protest, DAM members will sit on a dharna outside the office of Director of Education Neeru Nanda on December 11.
The action plan drawn up by the organisation includes demonstrations outside schools where the fee structure has not been revised in accordance with the High Court order. ``We will demonstrate outside every school against which parents complain,'' Kumar adds. ``We are planning to file a contempt petition in the High Court highlighting the fact that no move has been made by the directorate of education to form the Duggal committee''.
With the admission season on, parents are a worried lot. ``We are against exorbitant fees, but we also want our child to get admission in the school,'' says a parent trying to get her son admitted to Ryan International. ``In spirit, we are with the Mahasangh, but if we take to the streets it might adversely affect my son's admission.'' Aware of this problem, the Mahasangh has gone into a little advertising. Cable operators in different localities have put in small advertisements informing people about the Mahasangh and its plan of action. ``There are a lot of parents who don't know how to protest against the fee hike,'' explains V.K. Batra, general secretary of DAM. ``We have decided to take the issue into every home now''.
