Non-Dravidian party rule is still viable: Moopanar

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, DEC 6: The Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) agenda of reviving Kamaraj rule is gaining increasing acceptance, its president G K Moopanar said here on Saturday.

He told mediapersons that it did not matter in this context if the Congress forces stood divided, he said, arguing that if the Dravidian forces that split and separated way back in 1972 managed to be in power alternately, the Congress forces can also capture power in the State without losing their separate identities.

Responding to a question whether he was in favour of bringing together all the forces that moved away from the Congress (I), he said that he saw no need for any umbrella organisation. The Assembly elections in the State are two and half years away as yet, and translating the strategy to bring back Kamaraj rule has time on its side, he said, while emphasising the need to differentiate between the characteristics of the elections to the Lok Sabha and State Assembly.

``We have made our offer of co-ordination to the Congress, andit is for the Congress to respond,'' he said. Stating that Sonia Gandhi's leadership did make a difference to the fortunes of the Congress as seen by the Assembly results, he recalled that he welcomed her taking over the reins of the party months earlier.

Moopanar, while making his party's position clear on the issues of forming a third political front at the national level and a front in TN to wrest power from the Dravidian forces, he said the two issues are not related.

Describing the move for a third front as a non-starter for now, he said the compulsion for such formation is the fall of the BJP-led Government, and the Congress (I) stepping forward to do ``its Constitutional duty'' of forming a Government. The fall of the Government does not appear to be imminent, he said, pointing out that the allies seem to have closed ranks in the wake of the results of the Assembly elections held recently.
