December 6:Village Amboli claimed the 99th edition of the Harwood Super Division Football title as Bandra Packers and Holy Family drew 2-2 in the last league match at the St Xavier's ground, Parel today.Village Amboli had six points from three matches while the Packers and Holy Family were levelled at three each before the match. Both the teams required to beat each other with a difference of five goals each to top the league. Holy Family, who had won the Air-India Trophy earlier this season, tallied four points to finish second with a better goal difference.
Kishore Shetty's sixth minute goal saw Holy Family snatch the initiative early in the game. Against the run of the play, Shetty got a ball on the left flank and he thumped the ball into the net from 15 yards.
Packers, who won the Fair Play Trophy, drew parity in the 15th minute when Cleming Trueso's shot from outside the box deflected off a defender and entered the net. Augustino D'Silva, the family 'keeper failed to react.Hardworking mid-fielderVinod Kumar put Family ahead again just one minute before the interval from the penalty spot. The penalty was awarded when Packers defender Sanjay P handled the ball in the box.
The team from Bandra got their equaliser in the 60th minute when striker Clarence Remediuos dispatched a powerful shot from the top of the box in the left corner of the goal. Medio Nassir M did all the spade work before putting a parallel to Remediuos who climaxed it with a perfect placement.Altaf Mansari of Bandra Packers was adjudged as best player of the league while Denzil Saldanha of Village Amboli won a prize for highest scorer.Mid-fielders Chetan Solanki, Anand Sutar and Kishore Shetty shouldered the responsibilities for Holy Family, who appeared content in defence in the concluding stages of the game.
In contrast, the Packers with their offensive approach almost ended up scoring, four minutes before close. However, defender S Salim botched the opportunity lobbing the ball over the bar when he only had to slot the ballinto the open goal. He himself had initiated the move by dispossessing Family defender that left substitute goalie Wilson D'Silva hopelessly out of position.
Negi nets brace
MS Negi of BARC scored two goals in BARC's 3-0 win over Santa Maria in the Fr. Agnel WIFA Div III League match being played at the Goan SC Ground, Cross Maidan here today.
