Swan, Matulya workers to get pending wages
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, December 6: A meeting between Chief minister Manohar Joshi, mill owners of Matulya and Swan mills and the Girni Kamgar Sangharsh Samiti has rekindled hopes that workers of the two mills may finally get their long pending salaries. In the meeting on Saturday, the mill owners agreed to pay their workers salaries within the next five to six days.Around 1,500 workers of Swan mills and 850 workers with Matulya have been working without salaries for the past few months. While Swan workers have not been paid for six months, those of Matulya have been without their salaries for the past two months. ``We are hopeful that the workers will get their salaries,'' said Datta Iswalkar of the Samiti, ``since the chief minister has taken a serious note of the lapse. We have it on record that the CM himself has asked the mill owners to give the workers their salaries''. Said Iswalkar, Joshi reprimanded the mill owners who agreed to give the workers their salaries soon. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
