Don Bosco lads lay seige on title

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Dec 7: Don Bosco (Matunga) and Apostolic Carmel won the boys and girls under-16 titles, respectively, in the Colgate Inter-School hockey tournaments at the St Andrew's ground, Bandra, today.

Don Bosco overcame a resurgent St Anne's (Orlem) in a high-quality and exciting game, winning 3-1, while Apostolic Carmel prevailed 4-3 via the tie-breaker after a goalless regulation and extra-time period.

It was Don Bosco's centre-half Girish Pimpale who set the standards with his fine work in the centre, feeding the forwards with measured passes.

Don Bosco went into tthe lead as early as the fifth minute when Shahnawaz Choudhary went on a superb run down the left flank, drew goalkeeper Brian Nazareth out and could have scored it himself but decided to pass it to Nigel D'Souza who scored.

The second goal came seven minutes later when Keegan Gonsalves dodged past two defenders and slammed the ball from just inside the circle to stun St Anne's goalkeeper Brian.

Don Bosco tended to get complacent as thematch wore on. They had plenty of chances but never scored.

It was in the second-half that Anne's showed their desperation and went all out. They had a goal disallowed when Savio Nayak's shot from a penalty corner landed in the top corner of the goal.

In the 45th minute, Anne's reduced the margin through a goal which was similar to Don Bosco's first goal. Glen D'Souza went on a searing run down the left and cut in to pass to Alisdair and the latter simply tapped into the goal.

The healthy look to Bosco's scorline came with a skilled effort by Pimpale who dived to his right and slammed the ball home even as goalkeeper Brian had come out to thwart the player.

The girls final was in total contrast to the boys. It had Apostolic Carmel virtually laying siege on the rival area but never got down to scoring a goal. They earned many penalty corners but failed to convert any of them. The one player who stood out with her brilliant play was Martina Fernandes who showed the ability to carry the ball and beat afew players.

In the tie-breaker, Fiona Dharmai, Rosita Coelho, Rofina Mascarenhas and Martina Fernandes scored for the winners, while only Savina Cardoz, Idvita D'Souza and Jayshree Kanther were successful for the losing team.

St Andrew's boys beat St Stanislaus 2-0 through both goals by Shafeeque Sadra for the third place.

In the girls' hardlines tie, St Joseph's Convent (Bandra) bt St Francis Xavier (Kanjur Marg) 1-0. Glynelle Pereira scored the match-winner.
