20-yr-old raped, sets self on fire

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Dec 7: A 20-year-old girl set herself on fire this evening after she was raped by two men near Odeon theatre in Ghatkopar east. She has received 100 per cent burns and is in a critical condition.

The victim, a resident of the Indiranagar hutments at Vidyavihar east, was picked up by two men at around 5.30 pm from her home, dragged into an autorickshaw and taken to a place near Odeon theatre, Ghatkopar east. There she was raped by the three men, the rickshaw driver included, and let off.

After she came back home at around 6.30 pm, she doused herself with kerosene and set herself ablaze. Enveloped by the sheet of flame, she ran out of her house, which is close to Vidyavihar railway station, crossed the tracks and collapsed.

She was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar, where doctors confirmed she had received 100 per cent burns. In her statement to the chief executive officer, the girl name two persons, and based on this information, the police have nabbed two persons from the same locality. Thethird accused is still absconding. Police said the girl seemed to have been familiar with the rapists.

Three police stations have registered three different offences in the case. Tilak Nagar has registered a case of kidnapping, because the slums from where the girl was picked fall within the jurisdiction of Tilak Nagar police. Pant Nagar police, under whose jurisdiction Odeon theatre falls, have registered an offence of rape, while Ghatkopar police have registered a case of suicide because the place at Vidyavihar west where she collapsed comes under their jurisdiction.
