MUMBAI, DEC 8: The Maharashtra Cabinet today withdrew its resolution banning appointments in government departments, ``bowing to increasing public demand.''
Chief Minister Manohar Joshi today said that pressure was mounting on the government from all sectors to lift the ban on employment. ``The State Cabinet agreed to take the decision in favour of thousands of project- affected people, the physically handicapped and those belonging to the backward classes. Though it is difficult to implement the decision from a financial angle, we will go ahead with an employment drive in the Government,'' Joshi said.
He added he had no difference of opinion with Finance and Planning Minister Mahadeo Shivankar in this regard. He said the demand to lift the ban on employment came from various organisations including Raj Thackeray's Shiv Udyog Sena.
The Cabinet also passed a resolution to seek permission from the Union Government to ammend the Public Debt Act, 1944, which specifies rules in case of the State Governmentfloating public bonds.
Joshi today said that the ammended Act will be termed the Government Securities Act. ``The new Act will simplify rules to raise money through public bonds or loans for the State Government. It will also reduce the problems faced by investors who want to respond to different bonds floated by the State Government,'' Joshi said.
Meanwhile, Joshi today said he would not interfere in the police enquiry in a case allegedly involving Social Welfare Minister Baban Gholap. Gholap is in the thick of controversy over misappropriation of government funds by his office, with two of his personal assistants already arrested by the police.
Joshi said he had sought the case documents from Chief Secretary C Subramaniam and studied them. ``I got the necessary information from the documents, but I do not have any plans to initiate action against Gholap. The police will take proper action and I will not interfere,'' Joshi said.
