CALCUTTA, DEC 8: The CPI(M) is likely to induct new members to fill vacancies in its Politburo later this month. Names of the new members might be announced after the central committee meeting of the party in New Delhi on December 15 and 16.The vacancies have been caused by the death of two Politburo members -- former party general secretary E M S Namboodiripad and Sunil Moitra -- and the removal of L. Gangadhar Rao, who was dropped because of his advanced age during the 16th party congress in Calcutta in October.
In a departure from the norm, the party congress did not elect the new Politburo. General secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet had said during the congress that the new Politburo would be formed after the November 25 Assembly elections in Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram.
