CHANDIGARH, Dec 8: The Punjab Sports Department will shortly convene a meeting of principals of selected institutions, international players, officers and coaches of the department to discuss a hockey scheme to train the plus 1 and 2 students who pass out from schools.
The Sports Department has prepared a scheme to maintain continuity in their training programme. Sports Director Col Raminder Singh said that from next academic session students clearing plus 2, besides first year students already in colleges, would be selected for three teams at Ludhiana. The selected players would be admitted in different colleges. The scheme will also be extended to Jalandhar and Amritsar where astroturfs are available. The selection procedure would be completed at the end of this month.
Recently state hockey players including Olympians Pargat Singh, Sukhbir Singh Grewal, Surinder Singh Sodhi and Col Raminder Singh discussed the issue of maintaining continuity in training of the hockey players who pass plus 1 and 2 in schools.
Expenditure of such players would be borne by the Sports Department. The selected teams would be provided adequate exposure to advance training and higher level competitions.
The Punjab Sports Director said that teams in other disciplines would be selected in a phased manner depending upon the availability of infrastrucutre and potential.
