NEW DELHI, December 8: Siddharth Batra of Shri Ram College of Commerce and Rachna Sharma of Daulat Ram College emerged winners in men's and women's high jump events, respectively, on the opening day of the three-day Delhi University inter-college athletics meet at Chhatrasal Stadium (Model Town) here today.Batra leaped to a height of 1.65 metres, the same as Dalbir Singh of Kirori Mal. But the last named was, however, placed second as he took more attempts to do it. Ram Kumar (SRCC) and Gaurav Abrol (Kirori Mal), both with identical 1.60m, finished third.
Batra's gold medla-winning effort of 1.65 metres, however, was far short of the existing record of 2.05 metres standing in the name of Dharminder Sinha of SRCC, which he recorded during the 1988-89 championships.
In the women's section, Rachna Sharma cleared a height of 1.40m. The record (1.45m) stands in the name of Meena Makhan of Indraprastha College (1983-84).
As many as 58 colleges in men's section and 42 in women's section are participating in the championships. Shot put event (men) will take place on Thursday at 11 am instead of Friday to avoid clash with powerlifting competitions.
