BANGKOK, DEC 9: Taking inspiration from its women counterparts, the Indian men's hockey team began its campaign with a 9-0 rout of Singapore in the Asian Games hockey tournament here today.Spearhead Dhanraj Pillay accounted for as many as four goals while Baljeet Singh Dhillon chipped in with three as India, who led 4-0 at half-time, literally toyed with the hapless Singapore in this Pool `B' encounter.
Mohammad Riaz and Dilip Tirkey fetched the other two goals to complete the rout.
India needed to pile on goals today as they would and Bangladesh to boost goal aggregate ahead of crucial matches against China and defending champions South Korea.
Off their second penalty corner in 14th minute, Baljeet Dhillon found the net with a pile driver. A move involving Mohd Riaz, Sabu Varkey, Mukesh Kumar and Pillay led to another goal with the last named scoring.
India forged further ahead through penalty corners. Riaz from a rebound and Dilip Tirkey converting on the dot of half-timer from the fifth suchaward.
Pillay struck again immediately after the break, accepting Dhillon's pass. The Indian skipper scored another with a reverse flick. Dhillon added to the tally after being put through by Mukesh Kumar before Pillay completed the rout at the fag end of the match.
