PUNE, Dec 9: Calcutta's Basad Ali joined forces with MP Bharucha, Sukhi Kalra and VB Trilokekar to win the Wills Western Open Pro-Am event at the par-71, 6411-yard, Poona Club Golf course today.The meet, played on a stableford format comprising of one professional and two amateurs, determines the winner adding the pros score to the aggregate of the best two amateurs.
The event, which kicks off the Wills Western Open, the first stop of this region, from Thursday saw Basad's threesome total 115 points. Both Basad and Bharucha logged 34 points each, while Kalra, aided by an impressive seven-under 64 had 43 points to his credit.
In the runners-up position was Lucknow's Sanjay Kumar's team, who carded three-under 68, with 39 points. Sanjay's teammates KS Nigde, who had a two-under round with 38 points and Sati Kalra (36) turned in a total of 113.Completing the top three finishers were Akbar Ali's team which comprised of A Sanga and K.K Kashyap who totalled 109 points.
Basad, the winner, received Rs. 7000 for his effort while Sanjay pocketed Rs. 5000 and Akbar was richer by Rs. 3000.
Meanwhile, the Western Open `proper' which is the third regional tournament for professionals offers Rs 6 lakhs in prize money, with the winner standing to gain Rs. 99,960, the runner-up Rs. 66,660 and the next 40 finishers will subsequently stand to the prize money.
The Professional Golf Association of India (PGAI) under the Wills Sports Golf Tour has a total of 23 events on the tour worth Rs. two crore.
The Western Open, which in the past has witnessed the likes of Gaurav Ghei and Jyoti Randhawa, will see a total of 88 golfers teeing off. The meet this year, however will not have Gaurav and Jyoti owing to `social' and `professional' commitments, but has a host of the other top pros of the country.
Among the notable names to be seen over the four-day competition, played over 72 holes, will be Arjun Singh -- winner of the Wills Master, Shiv Prakash -- Southern Open winner, Ali Sher -- winner of Northern Open at Lucknow and Feroz Ali, Mukesh Kumar, Indrajit Bhalotia and Vikramjit Singh, a five time National Amateur champion, who has recently turned pro.
Apart from the pro event, the amateurs would also slug it out at the course which is all spruced up to host the fourth Western Open in a row.
