EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, DEC 11: A gangster believed to be a member of the Chhota Rajan gang was shot dead in an encounter at Warden Road in South Mumbai by the Gamdevi police late this evening.

Acting on a tip off, the police laid a trap for Vinu Bhupat, wanted in several murder and extortion cases.

When intercepted, Bhupat fired at the police party. The police fired in retaliation, injuring him seriously. Bhupat was rushed to Nair hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Bhupat's accomplice, who was also with him, managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

Two empty cartridges were recovered by the police from the spot of the encounter.
