MUMBAI, DEC 11: Senior Congress leader and nephew of former Chief Minister Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar was today unanimously elected Chairman of the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank, the apex financial institution of urban cooperative banks.Ever since the elections for the cooperative banks were announced, the Sena-BJP alliance was taking all possible steps to gain control over it. In fact Cooperation Minister Jaiprakash Mundhada had drawn a strategy to defeat the Congress nominees in all the districts.
However, Mundhada failed to make inroads in the Cooperative Sector as none of the nominees of either the Shiv Sena or the BJP were elected on the board of directors of the bank. In all the districts, Congress nominees were elected by a huge margin.
At the meeting of the board of directors held today, Ajit Pawar was unanimously elected as the Chairman of the bank. He represents the Pune District Central Cooperative Bank. R C Patil, representing the Thane District Central Cooperative Bank was unanimously elected Vice-Chairman in the same meeting.
Ajit Pawar, a member of the State Legislative Assembly, from the Baramati Assembly Constituency, was a Minister of State in the short-lived Sudhakarrao Naik Cabinet.
