Patel says Gowda-Cong tie-up as speculation

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
BANGALORE, DEC 11: Karnataka chief minister, J H Patel, said he had no knowledge of any moves by former prime minister, H D Deve Gowda, to strike an alliance with the Congress, while dismissing media reports on this issue as mere speculation.

Patel said he had no official version of the meeting between Sonia and Gowda. ``The motive for the meeting and its impact is only a guess,'' he said.

However, he added that the National political scene presented an unpredictable picture and coalition governments will be the order of the day henceforth. ``There is no polarisation of political forces but only small scale groupism all over the country. No one is taking any chances and going ahead with anyone who matters. I accept that this has happenned''.

On postponing the Janata Dal rally planned at Belgaum to mark its completion of four year rule in the State, Patel said it had to be postponed due to zilla panchayat elections. He said he would visit Delhi on December 18 to participate in the Karnataka Day celerbations, which would be inaugurated by the prime minister, A B Vajpayee.

Patel asserted that intra party squabbles had affected the image of the party but it did not affect the functioning of the government. In four years the government had done its best within its limitations and constraints. It was not perfect a government, he said, as it could not fulfil all the promises made like repair of roads all over the State and could not prohibit the sale of arrack due to economic reasons, he conceded.

Patel said his party and government did not shout from the rooftop about its achievements but quietly performed and achieved what ever that was possible. ``The achievements are visible and if the opposition turns a blind eye to it, I do not know how to make them see things'', he said.

Patel said stability of the government was a misnomer as Congress party in the name of stability made the country suffer dynasty rule for forty five years. ``What did they achieve except bringing the country to this present predicament? In fact we have to spend the first two years in office by washing off the dirty things left behind by the previous government '', he said.
