NEW DELHI, DEC 11: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day today without transacting any business amidst noisy scenes by non-Congress Opposition parties, demanding suspension of question hour to discuss the nation-wide industrial workers strike.Chairman Krishan Kant adjourned the House after Opposition members stalled proceedings for 15 minutes saying ``if the question hour cannot take place, the House stands adjourned till Monday.'' A nation-wide day-long strike by Left-leaning central trade unions began this morning to protest the Centre's economic policies.
Kant also ordered closure of television cameras and said nothing would go on record. As soon as the House met at 11.00 hours, non-Congress Opposition members were on their feet demanding suspension of the question hour for discussing today's country-wide industrial strike.
Krishan Kant, however, rejected their demand and said he would allow the matter to be raised through special mentions immediately after question hour. This was not acceptable to the agitated Opposition members, belonging to CPI(M), CPI, Janata Dal, DMK, BSP, TMC and others, who pressed for suspension of the question hour.
The chairman said ``we have decided once for all that the question hour will not be suspended'' and asked members to resume their seats and allow the questions to be taken up.
Kant said he has received notices from some members including J Chitharanjan and Gurudas Das Gupta, both CPI and Jayanthi Natarajan (TMC), for suspension of question hour but he could not do so. When the members insisted on their demand, asking the chairman to take into consideration the mood of the house, Krishan Kant said ``after my ruling, there is no question of taking sense of the House.''
