Indonesia take men's team gold

 
Bangkok, Dec 11: Indonesia beat China to win the gold medal in the men's team badminton today.

The bronze medals were shared by the losing semifinalists South Korea and Malaysia.

Men's team finals: Hendrawan Hendrawan (Indonesia) bt Sun Jun (China) 15-7 15-6; Ricky Achmad Subagdja/Rexy Ronald Mainaky (Indo) bt Zhang Jun/Zhang Wei (Chn) 15-11 15-8; Taufik Hidayat (Indo) bt Luo Yigang (Chn) 15-6 15-5.

Dream team lifts gold

China ensured they will enter the next millenium as the dominant force in the women's game when world number one Ye Zhaoying led their dream team to victory over South Korea in the women's badminton team final.

Ye did suffer some anxious moments before beating world number 8 Kim Ji-Hyun but the seemingly invincible Ge Fei and Gu Jun, the World and Olympic champions, gave no hint of cracking.

Women's team finals: Ye Zhaoying (China) bt Kim Ji-Hyung (South Korea) 11-9, 13-10; Ge Fei/Gu Jun (Chn) bt La Kyung-Min/Chung Jae-Hee (SK) 15-13, 15-11; Gong Zhicao (Chn) bt Lee Joo-Hyun (SK) 11-4, 11-1; Kim Shin-Young/Yim Kyung-Jin (SK) bt Zhang Ning/Tang Hetian (Chn) 15-11, 15-7.

China beat North Korea

China beat North Korea 3-1 to take the women's team table tennis gold medal.

The bronze was shared by losing semifinalists South Korea and Hong Kong.

Taiwan takes team title

Chinese Taipei had much to cheer about when they stole a march over arch-rivals China 2-1 to bag the first Asian Games women's tennis title.

Results

Janet-Whids Lee (Taiwan) bt Yi Jingqian (China) 6-3, 6-4; Li Fang (China) bt Wang Shi Ting (Taiwan) 6-1, 6-2; Janet-Whids Lee/Wang Shi-Ting (Taiwan) bt Chen Li/Li Fang (China) 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Chinese world record

Sun Tianni of China set a new world record in the snatch by lifting 111 kg in the 69 kg division of women's weightlifting.

Sun surpassed teammate Tang Weiifang's previous record of 110.5kg, with her third lift.

In a one-sided contest, Sun's first lift of 102.5kg was five kilos more than the best by any of her six rivals.
