The first lady of shipping
India is the inheritor of a glorious maritime tradition harking back to the pre-Christian era. Unfortunately Indian shipping suffered a serious setback in the nineteenth century due to stiff opposition from British interests.

The general strike called by the National Platform of Mass Organisations (NPMO) provided the unedifying spectacle of at least three political parties propping up the government playing a leading role in it.

After the applause
Even as the country basks in the glow of having an Indian walk away with the first Nobel Prize for Economics to go to an Asian, it would do well to listen carefully to what he has to say.
