Tough fight against old rivals

Harpal Singh Bedi
Bangkok, Dec 12: If one country matches India in lung power, it is Pakistan. The neighbours have battled for the Asian Games kabaddi gold ever since the sport was introduced at the Beijing Asiad in 1990. India beat Pakistan on the last two occasions.

The plots for a raid on rival territory are being readied once again. When the two countries take to the ground tomorrow in the first match of the 13th Games, they will have a lot besides medals at stake. For Pakistan, it will be a chance to settle past scores.

The Indians, who came here after court settlement of a bitter feud in their kabaddi federation over the team, have to prove they stand united. The wrangling in the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) had almost held up the defending champions in India. The 13-member Indian side, including three officials, could reach here only on Wednesday after the Delhi high court cleared the team.

``We are here as a one unit. We represent India and not any faction,'' said team coach SP Singh. He claimed theteam was selected purely on merit though it consists of five players from each faction of the AKFI.

Seven countries -- Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Japan, Thailand, besides India and Pakistan -- are participating in kabaddi.

After taking on Pakistan in the morning, India play Bangladesh in the afternoon. Bangladesh had claimed the bronze at Hiroshima (1994) and Beijing.

Team: India: Vishwajit Palit (captain), Ram Mehar Singh, Kiranpal, Muruganandan, C Honappa, BC Ramesh, Shamsher Singh, Rambeer Singh. Coaches: Flt Lt SP Singh and Ashan Kumar. Manager: GA Siddique.
