NHRC criticises Centre's stand on servants below 14 years

New Delhi, Dec 12: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday took exception to the Centre's refusal to implement its recommendation prohibiting Government employees from employing children below 14 years as domestic help. ``Several states have issued notification for implementing the recommendation, while others are saying that they will do it only after the Centre does so,'' said NHRC member and author of the recommendation V S Malimah during a meeting with senior government officials here.

Expressing anguish at the Centre's refusal to implement it, Malimah observed ``it's shocking that instead of saying that the recommendation is already implemented, the government secretaries are bringing many excuses.''NHRC chairman Justice M N Venkatachaliah said 69 per cent children at 10 years of age have not been to school in UP.
