MUMBAI, DEC 13: Atanu Lahiri, a 26-year-old LIC employee, won his first major title when he drew with V Saravanan of IOC and finished with nine points in the Independence Cup Chess Tournament on Saturday.GM Dibyendu Barua of Tata Steel also finished with the same number of points after beating IM Shekar Sahu of Union Bank but was edged out of the top prize on better progressive score.
Lahiri's team-mate, Sriram Jha, had a great opportunity to win the before the start of the round as he had the best progressive score. But from a poor position against IM Verghese Koshy (ONGC), he recovered to draw and finished third. Saravanan was fourth followed by Anup Deshmukh of LIC and N Sanjay of Income-Tax, Mysore.RESULTS
