Sukhu dissolves all Youth Congress units

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SHIMLA, Dec 13: The newly-appointed Himachal Pradesh Youth Congress president, Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, has dissolved all the units of the state Youth Congress, including the 64-member state body and offices of district and block YC presidents, saying the body was ineffective.

Addressing mediapersons here today, Sukhu said the present Youth Congress had proved a failure in playing an active role in the recent elections and in view of the poor organisational structure of the state Youth Congress, a new compact state body of the HPYC would be reconstituted with a month.

Sukhu said the new district YC presidents and block YC presidents would also be appointed alongwith the state body by next month. The earlier body, constituted in 1995, he said, had a number of over-age office-bearers who would not be included in the new body. The earlier body had nine vice presidents, 18 general secretaries, 11 joint secretaries, besides 13 district Youth Congress presidents.

The YC president said his endeavour would be to include more rural youth in the state Youth Congress and would start its membership drive to strengthen the state YC. He added that the body aimed at enrolling about two lakh youth in the drive.

Sukhu added that while highlighting the failures of the present Dhumal-led BJP-HVC government in the state, the Youth Congress would also endeavour to provide more employment opportunities for the state youth, besides also pressing for unemployment allowance for the youth.

The new body, Sukhu said, women would also get preference, though only active YC leaders would find their place in the reconstituted body. He said the new body would have about 12 members, which will include two-three women and some members from the dissolved body. As regards the support from state leaders, the YC president said they would work with their support and guidance and emphasised that there were no differences between them. He said lobbying for the post of YC president was bound to be there as there was only one post.

Later, former MLA and PCC general secretary Harbhajan Singh Bhajji said the PCC would provide all support to the Youth Congress. Bhajji is also incharge of the frontal organisations of the Congress in the state.
