MUMBAI, DEC 14: Nishikant Agarwal, a 24-year-old mechanical engineer studying computers at the Bhabha Atomic Energy Research Centre, Trombay committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his hostel room this morning. Investigators said it was probably the pressure of examinations that had led Agarwal to take the extreme step. However, all that a note left behind by Agarwal says is that it was an act of his own volition and that nobody should be held responsible. The incident took place between 8 am and 12 noon in the BARC Old Training School Hostel's room no 314 on the third floor. Agarwal shared the room with another student, S Venkatesh.
This morning, Agarwal refused to go to the institute to take his examination in Computer Engineering. When his roommate asked him the reason, he said he was leaving for his native place.
Not suspecting anything, Venkatesh left for the institute. When he returned in the afternoon for lunch he found Agarwal hanging from the ceiling.
Investigations haverevealed that Agarwal had passed his BE (mechanical) from his native town of Raipur in Madhya Pradesh and had enrolled himself for a Computer Engineering course at BARC only recently.
Assistant Commissioner of Police R M Garkal (Trombay Division) told Express Newsline that Agarwal, who had got a first class in BE (Mechanical), could have committed suicide because he was not sure of his performance in the examination. Agrawal's parents who reside at Raipur in Madhya Pradesh have been informed about their son's death.
Agarwal is the sixth student to commit suicide in the metropolis this year. In most of the cases the victims were unable to bear the pressure of examination or were unable to cope up with failure. Meanwhile, the Trombay police, under whose jurisdiction the incident took place, has sent the body to Rajawadi Hospital for post-mortem.
