NASHIK, DEC 14: The wholesale prices of onions at the Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee crashed by about Rs 400 per quintal today, following an increase in the arrivals.The average wholesale prices had stabilised between Rs 1,300 and Rs 1,400 per quintal over the past whole week at the market yard. The arrivals were in the range of 7,000 to 9,000 quintals per day over the week.
Today, the arrivals shot up to over 12,000 quintals, bringing prices down to an average of Rs 951 per quintal. The prices ranged from Rs 401 to Rs 1,053 per quintal based on the quality of the produce with the best quality going for Rs 1,053 per quintal.
During last week, prices had ranged from Rs 300 to Rs 1,500 per quintal and the first grade crop was sold for Rs 1,550 per quintal. The average price hovered at Rs 1,350 per quintal.
This declining trend is likely to continue further as the late Kharif crop (of Rangda variety) is due for harvest within a month. The increasing arrivals are expected to providerelief to consumers, who have been facing an unprecedented price rise in past several months.
In Nashik district, the area under the late Kharif crop has increased from 11,000 hectares to over 14,000 hectares this year, according to local agriculture officials.
