Woman sets self afire; husband, daughter charred

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, December 14: A tiff with her husband over his drinking habits ended in tragic consequences for 25-year-old Rajkumari early this morning. She had to watch her husband Ghanshyam and their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Shilpa become human torches even as she survived a suicide attempt.

Their one-room house in the NDMC colony in Bapu Dham was engulfed in flames after she doused herself with kerosene and lit a match. While an inebriated Ghanshyam, too slow to react, died on the spot, their daughter passed away on way to hospital. She had sustained 90 per cent burns. Her two-month-old baby Rahul is another survivor of this bizarre incident with 25 per cent burns. Rajkumari is still in a daze, having suffered 20 per cent burns, and is currently in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Unaware of the fate meted out to her family, she acknowledges setting herself, and in the process her house, on fire. ``I was very angry, so I poured kerosene on myself,'' she said, adding that, ``We've never had such a fight before.'' The incident took place at around 2 a.m.. Their landlords were woken by a scream and as they rushed to see what had happened, they saw Rajkumari with her baby rushing out of their living quarters. What followed next was chaos as neighbours found the room in flames. They rushed to douse thefire but by that time Ghanshyam had already died. Shilpa was rushed to the hospital but she collapsed on the way.

Ghanshyam's brother-in-law had reportedly come over to their house for dinner last night. He stays in the same colony and visits their house often. The two had a drinking session, and even after his brother left at around 10 pm, Ghanshyam reportedly continued drinking non-stop.

Rajkumari had meanwhile gone off to sleep only to get up at around 1.30 in the morning to find her husband still drinking. They had a fight and she threatened to end her life if he did not listen. After she set herself afire, Ghanshyam apparently tried to save her, but unable to control his movements he ended up catching fire himself. The room was said to be heavily engulfed in flames and the neighbours had to seek the help of the fire brigade and the PCR van, by which time father-daughter were almost charred.

The police has meanwhile recorded her statement and registered a case under section 309 (Attempt to commit suicide) under Indian Penal Code.

The couple hailed from Himachal Pradesh and had moved house about three months ago from Lodhi Colony. EUT have used the forged papers to travel to the USA in May this year. He had gone there to meet his son, who is studying in Chicago. The FRRO is looking into how the US Embassy issued a visa to him.
