DU girls beat Punjabi varsity

NEW DELHI, December 14: Delhi University beat Punjabi University, Patiala 23-16 in North-East Zone women's handball league matches which started at Kurukshetra today, according to reports reaching here.

In other matches, P U Chandigarh defeated G N D University, Amritsar 23-21, M D U Rohtak beat H P U Shimla 18-7. Delhi university defeated Jammu university by 20-14 and kanpur beat avadh university, faizabad by 28-20 in men section. The North-East zone inter university handball men and women tournaments will continue here till 16 December.

Punjabi University, Patiala beat G N D University, Amritsar 28-26 in a tough competition Patiala girls had an edge over Amritsar girls since the beginning of the league match. By half time Patiala scored 16 against 11 goals netted by Amritsar.

Paramjeet Kaur and Ranjeet Kaur made the victory easier by scoring 10 and nine goals, respectively. Gurpreet Kaur of Amritsar alone exhibited a great wonder by scoring 17 goals herself to the credit of total of 26 goals.

In men's section, Punjab University, Chandigarh had a one-sided match in its favour by defeating M D University, Rohtak 27-5.

By half time, the score was 11-2 because of the defence wall created by Chandigarh boys which became invincible by the raiding players of Rohtak. Gursharan Singh scored eight goals while Rajesh Thakur had five, followed by Gurcharan Singh and Naveen Negi who netted three each for Punjab University.

In other matches, Kurukshetra University women's team routed Rohilkhand University, Bareilly 16-0 whereas Punjabi University (Patiala) had a one-sided match against P A U, Ludhiana 15-1 in the women's section. G N D University humbled Ravi Shanker University, Raipur 21-9. In the men's section, Kurukshetra boys got a walkover against S S J Kanpur whereas P U Chandigarh thrashed Ravi Shankar University, Raipur 21-1.
