Polls now in student leaders' hands

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Dec 14: While uncertainty still prevails regarding M S University student union elections, the ball is now in the union leaders' court.

Neither the court nor the university authorities, it is now the leaders who will decide whether elections should be held or not.

The leaders, after much representation and slogan-shouting to hold elections before the end of this semester, are now themselves contemplating whether demanding polls was appropriate.

While the National Students Union Of India (NSUI) is against projecting any independent candidate under their banner, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad members are away from the campus; busy in their national convention. However, campaigning has already begun with union leaders canvassing among their probable voters. The last date for filing nomination papers is December 16.

While names of Hetal Shah of the Faculty of Commerce, Janak Makwana of the Faculty of Arts and Amit Dhomse and Jigar Inamdar, both of the Faculty of Commerce, are doing the rounds as contestants for the post of university general secretary, the NSUI is not ready to project them under their banner. It says they should contest independently.

University general secretary Prakash Verma, also a candidate of the NSUI, told Express Newsline, ``Those contesting do not have any issue, which they could claim as their election promise.'' Verma said students were at a loss when asked about their election promise, and only said they wanted to contest for the post of the UGS.

According to Verma, there were no takers for the vice-president's post. While names of students of the Faculty of Arts and Commerce are finding a mention on the campus, faculty representatives at the Faculty of Science claim that they would be trump cards for both the unions as there was a dearth of candidates at the other two faculties.
