At stake is the life of the nation
An overwhelming presence of one faith, tribe, and clan in the officer cadre and amongst the troops makes for one of the conditions that invite a military putsch. The other ingredient is a steady deterioration in the authority of the higher military leadership through manipulative actions of the political and bureaucratic elites.

Feud in the Dal
It has taken less than two years for the internecine feud to break out within the ruling Akali Dal in Punjab. The solidarity which appeared to hold since the formation of the government in February 1997 gave way last week with Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Co-mmittee (SGPC) president Gurcharan Singh Tohra demanding that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal quit the party post and devote his full time to governing the state.

Skirting the key issue
Newspaper reports tell of a briefing by a senior official of the Prime Minister's Office (no prizes for guessing who) at which it was stated that the government is convinced that, bar the Left, all other political parties are prepared for India to sign the CTBT by Sept 1999.
