PUNE, Dec 16: The anti-encroachment department's action of pulling down the house of Indubai, widow of eminent Marathi music director late Ram Kadam, has raised many eyebrows. The corporators cutting across political lines have expressed shock over the action since Indubai happens to be mother-in-law of the Shiv Sena corporator Neeltai Kadam. While the Neelatai approached the municipal commissioner, Rajiv Agrwal, after coming to know about the action, the anti-encroachment department had almost completed its action of demolishing the house by the time they received message from Agrwal.
Indubai's son, Vijay, told The Indian Express that a squad of anti-encroachment department led by Gautam Waghchoure came to Ganeshnagar in Erandwane and pulled down the room where his mother had been living for the last 10 years. Vijay Kadam pointed out that all the residents in Ganeshnagar, who were allotted tenements after the 1961 Panshet flood, had extended their houses. He complained that anti-encroachmentdepartment singled out Indubai's house.
Vijay also said the action was taken despite the fact that the Minister of State for Urban Development, Ravindra Mane, had ordered that the municipal corporation should not take any action against houses of flood-affected people. He said that the corporation also had not served any notice or had not given any intimation to his mother.
Kadam alleged that the administration took the action at the insistence of the local corporator Shiva Mantri of Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA). He said Mantri had pressurised the administration since his younger brother, Jaywant, was an activist of Shiv Sena. He alleged that Mantri forced the administration to take action since he was anticipating political threat from Jaywant Kadam.
When contacted, Shiv Mantri refuted all the charges against him saying that Kadam's house was causing obstacle to the local residents since it was constructed on the road. He said that the administration might have initiated action due to demand from thelocal residents. Mantri pointed out that Kadam family had rented out the house, which was pulled down by the civic authorities. He said the action was taken after all the top civic officials including Agarwal had seen it. Mantri said the action was necessitated since corporation was laying the tiles on the internal roads of Ganeshnagar locality.
