Rajan man killed in Andheri encounter

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, DEC 18: Police shot dead a Chhota Rajan gangster this afternoon on the Western Express Highway at Andheri. Abdul Kadar alias Kalia was killed around 2.42 pm near Sai Service Station when he fired three rounds at a police party, which were trying to prevent the gangster from escaping with a stolen car.

At around 1.30 pm Kadar and an associate of his hijacked a new white Fiat Uno (MH14 8610) belonging to the Kinetic Honda Service centre owner at Oshiwara. The duo put a gun to the driver's head and forced him to drive along the Link Road towards Juhu. When the car reached Goa Bhavan at Juhu they pushed him out and sped away. The driver, whose name has been withheld, informed the police control who in turn alerted the various police outposts.

A little later the stolen car was spotted at an outpost at Andheri (east). When the police tried to stop the car the gangsters fired at police, said sub-inspector Daya Nayak, a member of the squad. ``We were a little lucky because their car got caught in trafficat a signal just a little distance away,'' said assistant police inspector Pradeep Sharma, who was leading the police patrol. The gangsters fired again as the cops closed in on them. While Kadar was hit when the police retaliated, his associate managed to escape. Kadar was taken to a nearby hospital, but was declared dead before admission.

Kadar, 32, is named in at least 26 cases, which include murder, attempt to murder and kidnapping. He was detained under National Security Act (NSA) in 1996. Police sources revealed that Kadar was a close aide of notorious gangster Vinod Matkar, who heads a faction of the Chhota Rajan gang, before he began working directly for Chhota Rajan.
