New sheriff Bakshi sworn in

MUMBAI, DEC 19: Chandrakant K Bakshi, noted Gujarati writer, took oath as the new sheriff of Mumbai at a short swearing-in ceremony at the Raj Bhavan today. Bakshi who replaces Kulwant Singh Kohli, will assume office on Sunday. The oath was read out by Maharashtra Governor Dr P C Alexander.Born in Palanpur, Gujarat on August 20, 1932 Bakshi is widely hailed for his contribution to Gujarati literature. A former journalist and college principal, he has written 146 books including 26 novels, short stories, travelogues, autobiography and history books. ``The new sheriff is a highly acclaimed person from the field of literature. I am sure he will put some of his good ideas in the field of education to use during his term,'' said Chief Minister Manohar Joshi. He said that the Sheriff's post held importance and was respected as he could perform the duties of receiving important visiting dignitaries. Bakshi himself was not willing to comment on his agenda but said, ``I am walking with the sheriff's rule book inmy pocket to find out what I can do and what I cannot.''
