Two-year ban on judges

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
BANGKOK, DEC 19: Two judges who officiated at a controversial 54kg boxing semi-final, in which India's Dingko Singh beat the Thai favourite, have been banned for two years.

Anwar Chowdhry, president of the International Amateur Boxing Association, today said a Turkmenistan and a Filipino judge have been censured for making terrible mistakes during the bout.

Dingko Singh, who went on to win gold, defeated Thai favourite Sontaya Wongprates 18-14 on points in the semi-final last Monday. Two enraged Thai fans stormed in to the ring and tried to attack Korean referee Lee Je-Joon. The Thai camp lodged an official protest, which was rejected by the jury.Chowdhry said, ``That was the only protest we received in the whole competition and as a result, we have suspended a judge from Turkmenistan and one from the Philippines for two years.''
